Hi Oreilly. I have Learning SQL Second edition. I am just getting up to the third chapter. I have found it an excellent read and am going to install mySQL soon.
I went to the mySQL main downloads page at the mySQL website, instead of going directly to the download link included in chapter 2 to get mySQL. The version shown as stable is version 5.x.x. Although Alan in the book mentions version 6.x.x as recommended.
I have clicked on a download page for version 6, but it lists it as a beta, not a stable version. I am reluctant to use beta software, and would prefer to use version 5.x.x. Will this work ok for creating and populating the database with data and all the examples?.
Thankyou in advance
When the author was writing the book, there was a beta of MySQL 6 that was supposed to be released around the time that the book was released. That version 6 beta got pulled at that time and only 5 was available. I checked with the author around that time and he said that you can use the current stable release of MySQL 5 with the book without any problems.
I hope that helps,
