I’m feeling sort of stupid.

Why won't my classic tween motion path on a mask work?

In adding motion path to a mask, (pg. 124, CS4, TMM, under Classic Tweening,) I can't get step 18 to work. According to the book, at this point Flash is suppose to automatically save the movie clip symbol and bring you back to your main timeline, but it doesn't. It just remains grayed out in symbol editing mode. I've been very meticulous and have gone through this many times. Am I missing something?

  • Hello Cyd - It turns out there was an error in the example files for Chapter 3 of Flash CS4: The Missing Manual, which caused the problem you're having with the exercise.

I have obtained the corrected files, and can send them to you. Please email me at nanbarber@oreilly.com and give me your email address.

  • Hello again - Here's the answer from the book's author (the corrected file won't solve the problem you were having, after all):

Sorry you're having trouble with the classic tween mask exercise. It's kind of a tricky process. There are a couple places where a good tween can go bad. From your description, I'm not quite sure where things are going wrong. It could be at step 18, or it could be something before that. So, please forgive me if I'm covering things you already know in this response.

For one thing, the Classic motion tween that makes the circle move along a path is actually inside of a symbol. The tween that moves the circle is on the timeline in that Symbol 1, not the main timeline.

    >>In Step 16, make sure the line you draw with the pencil is in "Guide: Layer 1" not just "Layer 1"

--The pencil line is in "Guide: Layer 1"
--The circle (Symbol 2) is in "Layer 1"
--The Classic Tween is created in "Layer 1"
Everything in the list above inside of Symbol 1 and on the Symbol 1 timeline.

    >>In Step 18, after you create the Classic tween on Layer 1, you should be able to see the circle move when you drag the playhead back and forth. Is that happening?

    >>In Step 18, there is an error. It says after you Choose Create Classic Tween you're returned to the main timeline. That's wrong. You're returned to the main timeline in the next step (Step 19) when you click on the Scene 1 in the edit bar. (Sorry that slipped through the cracks!)

    >>In Step 20, after you lock Layer 2, the mask effect should be working. That means the only part of the picture you see is through the circle. You need to test this animation using Control->Test Movie. You can't test it inside of the Flash Authoring tool (Control->Play).

I hope this answers your question. If not, feel free to leave another message here or contact me at chris@BolinasRoad.com
