I’m frustrated

Why are ebooks so expensive?

The ebook "BGP: Building Reliable Networks with the Border Gateway Protocol" costs $31.99 on the O'Reilly site. It's a meager discount compared to the same ebook on Kindle and Nook for $17.59. I'm sure you only get about half that from the reseller so why not offer your customers the same discounts that they get from retailers? I'd rather pay you than B&N or Amazon...

  • Hello Sherman,

We don't control Amazon's pricing so I can't speak for them. We do offer a number of competitive discounts for oreilly.com members. One is our Buy 2, Get 1 Free offer, + free shipping on print orders over $29.95 in the US. We also offer a number of revolving members discounts, particularly for our ebooks. Take a look and you might find something that suits you.

Beyond price, our ebooks have a number of features only available from O'Reilly and that add to the cost of our products. Those include multiple DRM-free formats, currently up to five for many books, free updates, and lifetime access to your ebooks.

With that said, we've been doing a lot of pricing analysis that will inform electronic pricing going forward. It's too soon to say what the conclusions are, but you should check back with us.

    Thanks for writing. --Allen

Thanks. Some of those discounts are a good value, and I certainly appreciate non-drm formats and are willing to pay a little more for them. Without the discounts you mentioned I would probably be looking at buying a physical book or from Amazon/B&N. But with those discounts I'm definitely considering buying from you.

  • I know this is an older topic, but I still figured I'd throw my two cents in. There's really no reason whatsoever to buy from you as compared to Amazon given the price difference. I've already confirmed from Amazon that any updates and corrections to the book get pushed to customers the same way you do. DRM-free copies in multiple formats are nice, but they're certainly not worth nearly twice the price. Same with lifetime access given that I can accomplish that myself with software like Calibre. So you're really offering me nothing that even remotely justifies that cost difference. The only time I ever purchase from you directly is when something is heavily on sale. I agree with the original poster that I'd much rather buy from you directly, but your prices simply make it cost-prohibitive to do so. Drop the prices (in many cases in half or more), and then it becomes an option.
