web service for mapping

Hi everybody,
I wonder to know if the Web Mapping Illustrated Using Open Source GIS Toolkits book has any chapter and guide with examples of how to develop new web services for mapping under an OGC standar or similar. If this book doesnt cover this topic is there a specific O ́Reilly book where this topic is treated?.
Thanks in advance

  • Hi Paco,

Thank you for writing us about this, and I'm sorry for the delay in getting back to you. Web Mapping Illustrated does have a chapter on mapping web services, but I'm not sure it covers exactly what you're looking for, so I'm checking with the editor about this.

Chapter 12, Accessing Maps Through Web Services
This chapter introduces the concept of web services and the Open Geospatial
Consortium (OGC) specifications. It focuses on Web Map Service (WMS) and
Web Feature Service (WFS). You’ll find manual URL creation and Map Server
    configuration examples.

I'll let you know what I find out.

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi Paco,

Simon got back to me and said that he doesn't think that we have a book that covers what you're looking for. He says:

The closest thing I know of to what he's seeking is Chapter 11 of PostGIS in Action (Manning, 2011), "Using PostGIS in Web Applications". That talks more about building OGC web services with PostGIS and a few different web front-ends - MapServer, GeoServer, Open Layers, and more.

The book has a website at http://www.postgis.us/.

Sorry we don't have what you're looking for, but I hope that helps.

  • Thanks Rachel,
Anyway, it seems that this book doesn ́t cover what I am looking for, is there any technical book published by O ́Reilly that covers the issue I am looking for?, what I still looking for is for a book where I can learn by myself how to create web map services using the OGC standards, a book with some examples of services constructed under this standard with a technical focus.

    Thanks again
    Regards
    Paco.

  • Hi Paco,

Unfortunately, we don't have a book that covers what you're looking for, but you may want to check out the book Simon mentioned (see above), PostGIS in Action, particularly Chapter 11, "Using PostGIS in Web Applications". The book's website is at http://www.postgis.us/.
