I’m hoping for a solution

Using TOC on iPad freezes iBooks

I downloaded a copy of Learning Python 5th Ed (ePUB format). I can read it and mark sections, but using the TOC freezes iBooks.
After removing the book from my device and reloading it, I'm able to use the TOC (and consequently browse) the book just once, then the app freezes again.
Is this due to the size of the book (over 3000 pages)?

I hope there's a solution out there!

  • Hi Kees,

Thanks for reporting this issue. We're going to take a look and do our best to resolve ASAP. For troubleshooting purposes, could you tell us a few things:

    * What model of iPad do you have (e.g., iPad 2, iPad mini)?
    * What version of iOS are you running? (You should be able to find this in Settings->General->About.)
    * What version of iBooks are you running (You should be able to find this in Settings->iBooks)

    Thanks,
    Sanders

  • Hi Sanders

Thank you for getting back to me so soon.

    I have an iPad 3, iOS 7.0.3 and I’m using iBooks 3.2 (2083)

Both iOS and iBooks are in Dutch, for what it’s worth.

    Regards

    Kees

  • Hi Kees,

We have been able to reproduce this problem on an iPad 3 running iOS 7 and iBooks 3.2. We're now working on further troubleshooting to see if we can pinpoint the cause; we suspect it is due to the large size of the table of contents (not the large size of the book in general). We will try to find a fix, and will keep you posted.

In the meantime, perhaps you may want to try another EPUB ereader app for your iPad? I've tested this EPUB on the Bluefire reader (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/bluef...) and Marvin reader (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/marvi...), and did not encounter any problems with the TOC or the EPUB freezing.

    Hope this helps,
    Sanders

  • Hi Kees,

After doing further research, we confirmed that the cause of the freeze issues in iBooks was indeed the file size of the Table of Contents. To address this issue, we have posted an updated EPUB to your account that includes a shorter Table of Contents (one that includes only entries down to top-level subsections of chapters and appendixes), which I've tested on an iPad 3 running iOS 7 and iBooks 3.2, confirming that there were no freeze issues.

You can redownload the EPUB file from the Your Products page to get the latest version. We hope you will find the TOC easier to navigate and that you don't experience any further issues with the book. Please let us know if you encounter any further problems.

    Thanks again for your patience,
    Sanders
