Using Visual Studio 2015 with Head First C#

In Visual Studio 2015, there isn't an option to select a "basic page" template. It's now difficult to follow what the book is doing. Source code from the link isn't good because it only shows the entire project's source code instead of each section the book covers into multiple parts. Microsoft won't let me download Visual Studio 2013 on my other PC because it's outdated and redirects me to Visual Studio 2015. Any suggestions to get past the first chapter and pages?

Can someone provide the basic page template?

  • Hi Cole.

    Sorry you're having trouble.

I contacted the authors of Head First C#, and here's what they told me:
    ------------------------------

Microsoft makes older versions of Visual Studio available through their Visual Studio Dev program, which is free to join. It can be downloaded from these search results: https://myprodscussu1.app.vssubscript... – that should give the reader an experience as close as possible to the book.

If that isn't an option (some conditions may prevent installation), the reader should be able to create a Windows 8.1 application project in Visual Studio 2015 by navigating to "Templates > Windows > Windows 8 > Windows" in the "New Project" dialog and choosing "Blank App (Windows 8.1)" (the user may need to search for "Blank App (Windows 8.1)" by clicking the link to search online templates).

If none of that works, no problem—the reader can jump to Appendix II ("WPF Learner's Guide") and create a WPF project. There's a complete replacement for chapter 1, and then there are only replacements for a few pages in chapter 2. After that, the appendix won't be needed again until chapter 10.

    ------------------------------

    I hope that helps.

    Best,
