I’m frustrated

Toolbars on new blank documents don't automatically open

how can I set up Word in Office 2008 for the Mac so a new blank document also opens my toolbars at the top of the screen (just like Office 2003 used to do)? I can get them up there with clicking thru the menus each time but isn't there an easier way??

  • Hi Ron,

These tips listed on page 18 should help.

Those of you that are used to Office 2004 are wondering where your beloved “Flag for Follow Up”, “Tables and Borders”, and Web Page Preview buttons have gone—not to mention the Cut, Copy, and Paste buttons. Well, although they’re MIA from the Standard toolbar, they’re still alive and well in Word 2008, and you can reinstall them in your toolbar with little effort.

Control-click the Toolbar and choose “Customize Toolbars and Menus” from the shortcut menu (or choose View ➝“Customize Toolbars and Menus”) to open the toolbar and menu customization window. Here you can add these and all kinds of missing toolbar buttons— and delete those you don’t actually use. For the full story of toolbar customization, see page 759. In the meantime, you’ll find “Flag for Follow Up” in the Tools menu, the Draw Table command in the Table menu (or in the “Tables and Borders” toolbar); and Cut, Copy, and Paste in the Edit menu or on the keyboard at F2, F3, and F4 (or via the usual keyboard commands of c-X, c-C, and c-V).

    Hi Mace
Sorry I written been back to say thank you for your response - I do appreciate it. I guess my frustration with this took over and I have left it a while.
I had seen the info you refer to and had done those things described already. So it hasn't reeally solved my problem.
I have discovered that I cannot get Control-click on the toolbar to bring any action at all.
However, I can now articulate my problem more clearly. I want icons on my toolbars to open when I open a new blank document (and saved ones as well).
I can get icons open after following a series of moves described above - and more. But they disappear when I close the window.
    Here's what I want

And here's what I keep getting

I wonder - would re-installing Office for a repair install help? Maybe it's a flaw in the program?
