Redesign makes everything _harder_

The redesign of the "Your Products" page has actually made everything more difficult to access, not less.

I currently have 46 ebooks listed in my products. In the old design, I could sync those to Dropbox with one click, and then easily delete the 6 or so I don't actually need to have around.

The current design has turned that into, for the 40 or so ebooks I keep current with, a 3 X 40 = 120 click operation.

From 1 click (and some quick deleting) to 120 clicks to get the same stuff downloaded. How is this better for the user?

Why don't you just put the the "Send ebook" choices (individually presented, NOT hidden behind another button) and the "epub", etc. choices at the top of the list, and make the product list a checklist with a select/deselect all option at the top. I go down the list, choose the titles I want to download, choose the formats I want them in, choose where they should be sent, then hit go (see image).

This would be so much easier for the user.

  • Hi Matt,

Thanks for your feedback about the redesign. We really appreciate your thoughtful comments, and we will consider what you're saying.

We removed the option to send all ebooks to Dropbox with one click because we found that sometimes Dropbox would delete ebooks that were in your Dropbox when you tried to send them all, because of the way their API works, and we decided that was a bad experience.

I'm curious about how you were using this. Were you re-sending all your ebooks to make sure you have the most up-to-date versions? We've added an updated date to the ebook listing, so you'll see when your ebooks were last updated (this is any change to the ebook files, including content and formatting changes, as well as making a new format available). We'll continue to send emails for big content changes to ebooks, so you can know if larger changes have been made. Is this helpful, or do you prefer to just always know you have the newest files?

    Thanks again for writing us,

    Rachel James

I also agree that the new design lacks some functionality that was really useful. The 1-click sync all with dropbox button was really useful, I used it a lot since I tend to delete the folder sometimes to save space in dropbox, knowing that I can get get the ebooks back with a single click... now that no longer is true.

Thanks for your reply, Rachel. Sorry it's taken me so long to respond--I apparently overlooked the notice I usually get when GS responses are posted.

I appreciate the emails for major ebook updates. What happens for me is I don't always get those notices at a time when it's easy or possible to grab the new version, and I find myself getting a few updates behind on multiple titles, so it's just easier to sync 'em all. Also, like Jaume below, I occasionally need to clear out Dropbox space and have to resync when a project is over.

Regarding updates: maybe the titles listing could have some kind of "New since last sync" indicator? (tweaked graphic below)

I realize this whole issue just drips of entitlement, considering you're already offering a terrific service for free. Um...sorry 'bout that.

I've also just realized the bandwidth implications my approach has for O'Reilly, so I'll try to be more considerate of that. It does occur to me that a system that allows the user to easily bulk-select what titles to sync and that indicates what updated titles haven't yet been synced could solve the UX problem for us, as well as reduce bandwidth load for O'Reilly by reducing unnecessary downlaods.

And really, how hard could it be? (Asked the non-web programmer guy who's seen enough Top Gear to know better.)

    Thanks!
    Matt

  • I have to admit, the send all was an important feature. I didn't mind the books going away and coming back at all. Plus, lets not even talk about updates. You now have added Google Drive and Kindle. I would like to send all of my ebooks to Google Drive and stop using Dropbox, however at 3 clicks a book minimum it will take FOREVER to send them all there. Same with Kindle. Bring this feature back.

  • Well, the new features are good. A way to sync titles in bulk--maybe folder-based now--is still really needed.

Also, to make dragging to folders easier, the titles should really scroll independently of the sidebar.

  • I’m frustrated disappointed
This works passably if you only have a few books, but if like me you have invested in many titles then this is a disappointing oversight of usability which could be so easily rectified and improved eg Matt's suggested solution is elegant, clear and simple, (and simple to implement).

I would like to know what is going to be done to rectify this situation to make the sync feature actually useful again ?

and when, to save me huge amounts of manual clicks.

  • Thank you all for sharing your thoughts with us. I wanted to let you know that we've added back in the option to send all ebooks to Dropbox (you'll find it in the upper right corner of Your Products page), and we'll continue to consider how we can improve the experience.
