Problem with files/instructions for the Server Behavior: Delete Records

I upgraded to Dreamweaver CS6 (via Creative Cloud) and have begun working through the tutorials in the CS5.5 Missing Manuals. I ran into an error working through the Chapter 26 Tutorial on Deleting Records. When I reached the step to implement: The Server Behaviors>Delete Record, an error occurred: DeleteRecord.js: _ColumnList has no properties. Just a heads-up to the author working on the CS6 Missing Manual. [Final note: All other steps in the tutorial worked for me.] Looking forward to the ebook version of CS6! The current CS5.5 version is great! Have learned much!

  • Hi,

We've decided to remove the section on server behaviors from the Dreamweaver CS6 edition of the book. Adobe hasn't updated the server behaviors for several versions and it appears that they've abandoned development of them. The server-side PHP code that Dreamweaver produces just isn't' very good, and we no longer feel comfortable teaching our readers how to use a tool that is headed for the scrap yard.

Having said that, my experience with the JavaScript errors Dreamweaver produces at times, often go away when you quit and restart the program. That may fix the problem you encountered

I'm glad you've enjoyed the book.

  • Thank you for your response. I am sad that this feature will no longer be supported. May I ask one more question? How do I delete a record then? I have purchased your Javascript & jQuery: The Missing Manual, and have begun working through it. Will I find the solution there? I have also purchased the PHP & MySQL Missing Manual texts. Any other suggestions? Learning by doing is my way of learning. Thank you.

  • To delete a record from a database you still need to use PHP -- the JavaScript & jQuery book won't help with this. The PHP & MySQL book will, however.

Learning every day is the best way to live! Best of luck to you.

  • I asked about the Javascript & jQuery text of yours because DW CS6 flagged the error in the DeleteError.js external Javascript file.

Once again thank you for taking the time to respond to me. I need to also mention that I have read through most your Missing Manual: Creating a Website text. Another great text! I undertook this effort because my web host (and sometime webmaster) became unreliable. I am doing a significant overhaul of my website, which I have found has many errors (my webmaster didn't follow-through--and I didn't double-check his work) (www.ecrisk.com). I have made significant progress and your texts have guided me nicely to my current situation. I couldn't do this without you as my guide!

  • Oh, I get it. Those JavaScript errors are just indicating that Dreamweaver is having a problem completing an action -- you can't actually fix those problems with your own JavaScript program.

That's fantastic that you're learning to build your own web site! (I wish I could take credit for the "Creating a Website" Missing Manual, but that was written by another fellow -- Matthew MacDonald)

    Cheers
