I’m fine, just suggesting.

Old Edition Recycling.

Since going green is the big thing for companies these days maybe O'Reilly would like to do a return-for-discounts-on-new-editions for old editions of books that could be either recycled or donated to a school or library .

Not that O'Reilly should have to offer discounts and not that people cannot do this on their own but I didn't think it would hurt to check. I need discounts to help with my book addiction. :P

Make a nice press release for O'Reilly at least. :)

    Hey Woody,

I like the spirit of your idea. We currently offer a 40% upgrade offer on new editions. You just have to register your books to receive an automatic update. Also, we're offering a greener solution by selling most of our books in pdf and ebook formats off oreilly.com. Though not completely carbon neutral, they do eliminate printing, shipping, and distribution. Are these what you were looking for?

    Regards, --Allen

  • I’m appricative of the quick reply.
The 40% thing is awesome. I have registered my books (all 75 of them I could find) but I do not see any easy way to request the discount on a few of my Perl books that I know have updated editions. I did see another post here related to that where a company rep asked for information to be emailed to him. I can only hope/assume that there is something in the works to make this process a little easier (more automated).

It is great that O'Reilly offers that discount in the first place and I thank you for it.

I do like the PDF formats being available though I've not really made use of them yet. I have bought a tablet PC just to make PDF viewing easier, but there is just something about holding a book that is hard to replace.

Though that does go to another topic of offering prorated pricing to those who own print versions of books already. Greedy customer, I know. ;)

Does O'Reilly get a lot of requests from schools/libraries for books?

Thanks for the reply. This support site is excellent and it is great to see such quick replies.

I’m happy you're thinking like this. Keep em coming

I'll add to what Allen said: we already have lots of returned/unsalable books from the way that big bookstore chains shuffle books back and forth (they return and re-order rather than moving from one store or warehouse to another). We give lots away to various projects overseas, etc.

And of course, asking people to return them (and then shipping them out again) would have a significant energy and packaging cost.

That's why we give the discount without requiring the return.

But thanks so much for thinking of this.

  • I’m stoked. Tim O'Reilly himself replied!
I see, that's cool that the company already donates books like that.

Thank you for the reply, the generous discounts and one of best companies out there Mr. O'Reilly.

  • Hello,

When a new edition is released we send everyone who has registered the previous edition an email with a discount code for the new edition. If you register an old book after the new edition has been out for awhile then it's likely that discount code has already expired.

We'll think about a better way to handle this case but in the meantime you are welcome to email us at order@oreilly.com with the few Perl books you mentioned and we'll see what we can do.

    Thanks!
    Sarah
