Office 2010 manuals in Kindle format?

When will you be introducing Missing Manuals for Word 2010 and PowerPoint 2010? Will they be available in Kindle format?

  • Hi Jim.

    Thanks for getting in touch.

We're just finishing up "Office 2010: The Missing Manual," which covers both Word and PowerPoint 2010, among other Office programs. The book will release later this month. When it does, you'll be able to buy an ebook bundle that includes a Mobipocket file, which you can read on a Kindle.

You'll be able to order the ebook bundle from this page: http://oreilly.com/catalog/9781449382407

Here's more information about our ebooks: http://oreilly.com/ebooks/

    I hope that helps!

  • Dawn,

Thanks for your answer. I was aware the consolidated Office 2010: The Missing Manual would be released, and am pleased to know it will be available in a Kindle edition. However, my question was more about the individual Missing Manuals for Word 2010 and PowerPoint 2010. The sections in the consolidated book are no doubt useful, but because the PowerPoint 2007 MM has 496 pages, far more than the roughly 190 pages allocated to PP in the consolidated MM, I would love to have the greater detail. Similarly, the individual (stand-alone) Word 2007 MM has fully 528 pages compared to the consolidated Office MM allocating only about 180 pages.

Will the stand-alone MMs for individual Office apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) soon be available? And will they be available on Kindle? Thanks for your reply.

  • Hi Jim.

This time around, we've decided not to do full Missing Manuals for Word and PowerPoint 2010. The only coverage of those two programs we're publishing is in "Office 2010: The Missing Manual." The book includes over 200 pages on Word, and over 100 pages on PowerPoint. While that's not nearly as many pages as our previous standalone books on those programs, the content in this new book was written from scratch to consolidate as much information as possible into fewer pages than before.

We do, however, have full books on Excel and Access 2010, in case that helps:

  • Hello again, Dawn,

Thanks for your reply. I am a bit surprised, as both Word and PowerPoint are crucial components of the Office Suite. Still, I look forward to seeing the consolidated version, and one day soon having it available on my iPad for quick reference.

    Best regards.

  • Hi Jim.

I you purchase the ebook bundle for "Office 2010: The Missing Manual", it will include an ePub version of the book, which you can read on an iPad. Here's how:

  • Hi Dawn,

I thought I saw some of your MM books on Amazon listed as Kindle books. Is this ePub version exactly the same thing, or different from the Kindle version? If not, would there be any loss of functionality with the ePub version? Will there be text "search" capabilities?

    Warmest best wishes,

  • Hello, Jim.

The content, of course, is the same between the two ebook versions, but the functionality is a bit different. Most of the standard features are the same, though: you can search the ePub version on the iPad, and you can highlight and annotate, for example. Personally, I prefer the iPad/ePub presentation and navigation for computer books.

If you prefer the Kindle experience, however, many of our books are available in Kindle editions. You also have the option, as Dawn suggested, of buying the ebook bundle directly from O'Reilly. That way you can try out the ePub on your iPad using iBooks or another reader, as well as use the Mobi version with your Kindle reader. You'll also get PDF and Android versions.

    I hope this helps.
