Network errors downloading videos.

Haven't been able to download Strata 2013 due to network problems that creep in during each video download (actually 9 out of 11 have failed so far). The problem crops while downloaded via Chrome or Safari. Here is an example of a cloud video link that fails --

i have a 150 megabit connection via Verizon's FiOS service, if that matters.

    I'd be happy to try and help. I would suggest that you trying using Firefox as your browser when downloading this video, and keep trying to download the video. Also, if you are trying to download it on a corporate network you might be experiencing some difficulty because of the security settings on that network. Hope this helps and have a great day!

  • I tried it with Firefox -- same problem. I experienced a problem just like this before, and that time it was confirmed that it was a problem with the cloud distribution out of New York City.

    In any case, it's a pain to download 151 individual mp4 files when they have hiccups like this...

  • I've been struggling with this exact issue for two weeks now. Knowing the issue was definitely on your end I was patient, I emailed orders@oreillly.com about the download issue. However, I never heard back from anyone.

    Today I'm still having the problem. Good thing I did a search on get satisfaction for 'network error' and found this thread. At this point my blood is boiling... You've wasted my time and money. This is a known issue with your static file delivery system, why this is not fixed? You are a technology publishing company and you are telling me you can't serve static files?

      Yeah, one of the Mirror Image cloud download servers is hiccuping again and is unreliable for downloading video. Today, I attempted to download 6 videos concurrently -- 2 completed, 4 failed. i restarted the 4 failed ones, concurrently -- 2 completed, 2 failed. i restarted the 2 failed ones, concurrently, and 2 completed. As for downloading individual videos, they randomly fail too. The behavior is that the download speed ramps down to 0 and then it times out. On average, the videos I'm trying to download today are a little over 400 MB. However, when it's working, I'm pulling between 3-4 MB/sec over fiber on simultaneous downloads and about 1-2 MB/sec for individual downloads.

      Anyway, I wish there was some unattended way to download an archive of all the videos from a conference section, even if I have to break them apart on my computer. I'd rather nurse one big-long transfer than nurse many small transfers. Maybe everyone else watches them online, but I'm frequently in places without an Internet connection and watching them online is no good there.

    I'm currently having trouble downloading a couple of video series that I bought by McCullough and Berglund on "Mastering Git" and "Mastering Git Advanced". The videos are much smaller than downloading a movie from Netflix. I probably won't be buying any more video series.

  • I'm experiencing exactly the same problem. It's the first time in my life that a problem like that occurs. What is the problem with the server uploading files? In my case, I don't want a refund, I want to download the videos. I must retry 4-5 times to download each videos because the download stop at randomly percentage.   • After reading the other posts, I search for a solution about network problem and I found this solution:

    - First, I installed FireFox.
    - I installed an add-on called "Best proxy switcher"
    - I then search a web site where I can find some proxy servers located in a different region than mine; other than Quebec... :(
    - I found this site: https://hidemyass.com/proxy-list/sear...
    - Finally, I set on proxy server in Firefox using the add-on an I was able to download every file of my order.

    I'm not a master of Networking but considering my statements, I think the problem was that the static files was blocked by something with my internet provider or something else.

    However, considering the little help that customer support for this problem, this will be the last time I will buy a video from Oreilly.

    I’m trying to download the video files for the 2014 Fluent Conference. I have never had such a difficult time downloading anything before... It has been about a 50-60% failure rate... Constantly having to re-download a file until I get it in full. I’m on my 4th day now I believe.

    I know for sure that the following files will not download completely. I have tried downloading them in excess of 10 times. How and where can I download them? I’ve tried Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Download Them All, curl, wget. They all fail. They won’t download from your website (http://vplayer.oreilly.com/?video_pro...). Why is this so difficult?

  • He just said that they have "tech with proven solution" but not implemented now in production. Just follow my step by step above in my previous post and you will be able to download all your videos. Try to choose a proxy server with high speed.

    It's very weird that a company like Oreilly do marketing to sells videos without having a stronger architecture to upload files. In french, we say "Cordonnier mal chaussé" (someone who doesn't apply his skills to his personal situation.) but I will not tried to translate it. :)

    I want to let you know we do care, a lot, though I know that may not be evident from this thread. Unfortunately, we've exhausted the capabilities of our current platform upon which these problems occur. Because of this we're in the midst of a very large and complete revamp of our video platform that will resolve these and other issues. We'll be on a new platform that includes a new player and features.

    On top of that we're doubling down on video training, such as our newly released Software Architecture Fundamentals Part 1, Software Architecture Fundamentals Part 2, Introduction to Python, and Intermediate Python, and more.

    We're moving as fast as we can on the new platform, and expect to be on it in June. While that may not satisfy those of you who are experiencing download issues as they happen I want to assure you we read every reply in this thread, cringe when we do, and work even harder on the solution.

  • I'm glad you're updating your video platform. I recently bought the Software Architecture Fundamentals set and trying to download the videos has been a HUGE pain. I noticed in some similar threads that people were given FTP links to zipped up video bundles--is this still an option until the new platform is deployed (alternately, how about cloud auto-upload on those, similar to books)?

    Justin's comment about the "100% satisfaction guarantee" is spot-on. I don't want a refund--that won't satisfy me. I want the videos. (I've been completely satisfied with O'Reilly's eBook cloud delivery: nooted Nook + DropSync == instant DRM-free satisfaction.)

    Those messages from last year are from before we upgraded to our new CDN and video player system.   The old CDN that we used
    was inconsistent and provided a really poor experience in some areas of the world.   Our new one is great and we don't have those
    problems anymore.

    I was one of the people above that was having problems and I can say that the video service has definitely changed for the better. I haven't had any problem for the past several months. I've had no problems downloading or playing the videos.

    So, I feel very comfortable in purchasing videos now.

    My current experience with O'Reilly video matches past poor performance.

    I guess from the page source, the new CDN is Kaltura

    but

    Same old problems:
    - stuttering, buffering playback that basically prolongs time wasted, ie 10 min videos turns into 30 minute videos
    - repeated attempts to download result in the same file size but playback is cut off.

    The only workaround I've found is:
    1. play video and let run until the gray bar advances to near the end of the video; as stated this can take 3x the playback time listed
    2. Begin video download
    3. The running video will finish before the download so close that playback window after video completes else the next video autoruns and saps bandwidth from your download
    4. Open the completed video download and playback, advance progress mark to near the end to check that no content has been cutoff
    5. repeat from 1 if incomplete

    This whole experience has provided a valuable lesson:
    Don't waste time on this. 50% is not worth it. 90% off is not worth.

    Glad to hear, 5 mos ago Alan had a no problems anymore, but to think the new Learning Path video bundling offering just came out with this poor CDN performance is unreal.
