Monstrous PDF size

I bought "Make: Getting startet with 3D Printing". I cannot believe the PDF is 247 MB big! It's only 250 pages. It's still 150 MB when I compress it with 7zip. Something with this PDF went completely wrong. The images seem to have more than 600 dpi; much too much for 90% of all users. Could you please take care of this issue, so the PDF is not larger than 16 to 20MB. Thanks.

    Hi Chorus,
Our eBooks team was able to regenerate this title's PDF and get it down to @150 MB and it should be downloadable in the next couple of business days for you. They noted that they can't reduce it further, otherwise the image quality would suffer.

    Cheers

  • Hi Tai
Thanks for taking care of this issue. Although 150 MB is still monstrous and larger than the big biochemitry book PDFs which have more than 1000 pages and even more complex pictures. I suppose the team should better investigate their PDF generator options especially for image resolution and compression methods. Have a look at the EPUB version which is "only" 40 MB and the image quality is good enough. But I prefer PDF and there is technically no reason why the PDF should be bigger than the EPUB. They seem to use Antenna House CSS Formatter to generate the PDF. This tool has plenty of image compression and downsampling options (see https://www.antennahouse.com/product/...). Just as an example: look at figure 4.11 in the book; it seems to be PNG coded, has 1565x1104 true color pixels and 2.6 MB size; when I reduce it to screen resolution and code it as JPEG the quality is still good enough for an ebook but the size is only 100k; the whole book encoded with the same compression factor would be about 10MB!
    Hope this helps.
    Cheers
