Is iMovie version 10.0.7 iMovie 11?

My iMovie app does not have "Duplicate Project" under the "File" menu as indicated in "iMovie' 11 & iDVD The Missing Manual" on page 58 under heading "Duplicating a Project". I just reinstalled iLife 11 and the iMovie version is 10.0.7.

  • Hi Doug,

Thank you for your question, and I'm sorry to hear your frustration. The naming conventions for iMovie versions can be confusing, but the short answer is that you do not have the correct book for the version of the software you're using.

The longer version is that Apple used to refer to the year of the software release as part of the actual name of the software, but this name is distinct from the version number of the software. So, "iMovie '11" is the name of the software released during the year 2011, but the version number for that release is 9. As mentioned on the product page for iMovie '11 & iDVD: The Missing Manual, that book covers version 9 of the software (labeled, confusingly, as iMovie '11).

With the 2014 release of iMovie, Apple changed conventions and did not include the year in the name of the software (so it became just "iMovie," rather than "iMovie '14) but continued the consecutive version numbering of the program, which became version 10. That is the version of the software you're using, and it is covered in our book iMovie: The Missing Manual (2014 release).

I hope this helps, and again, I'm sorry about any confusion. It sounds like you should return the book you have and replace it with the later edition.
