That's totally unacceptable! Can you tell me which title you're referring to and we'll arrange to have a replacement sent.

  • I'm checking into it for you and should have an answer shortly from our folks in our CA office.

Since I have no records of other complaints on this title, can you check to see if there's a date in square [ ] brackets on the lower righthand corner of the copyright page and let me know what it is? That will help me track this print run. I'm hoping you just got a "renegade" copy.

  • there is a [M] on the lower left corner of the copyright page... very close the bit about how the book uses a RepKover, "durable binding" :)

    but i can't find a date...

  • Hi Everyone!!!

Let me begin by stating how ABSOLUTELY satisfied I am with the whole Head First Series!!! They are simply amazing!!! How amazing? Well, let’s put it this way (just to ad some perspective here): I have always wanted to learn web development and the ONLY series that encouraged me to do it was the Head First Series. Accordingly, I own following titles:

    • Head First HTML & XHTML w/CSS
    • Headfirst JavaScript
    • Head First AJAX (just got it today!!!)

However, with normal and reasonable use, my HTML & XHTML w/CSS title has started to come completely apart at the binding. I started using scotch tape to hold it together, but it got too frustrating, so I rarely refer to the book anymore. If this were a car, I would probably conclude that this was “planned obsolescence”—as soon as one gets finished paying for it, all of a sudden it’s time for a new one. Rather, I just think it is one of those things that happen from time to time.

Yes, I have completed the title and reasonably expected to be able to refer to it often. Yet, because it has become so unexpectedly ragged, I rarely take it off the shelf because, amid working on a demanding project, the last thing I want to contend with is a book that I have to touch gingerly lest it falls completely apart, thereby frustrating my newly formed (and admittedly fragile) development skills. Can someone help me? What remedy can I expect? Please let me know.

Let me say, though, I am not in a really strong bargaining position here. I mean, regardless of the outcome of my complaint, I am still compelled to buy your titles and will continue to do so. Why? It’s simple: when it comes to understanding meta cognition and how to appeal to the brain, Head First has a monopoly as far as I am concerned (I wish I would have come across you guys a long time ago). I mean, really, the fabled “Lynda.com” doesn’t even come close to your structured, pedagogical approach to learning what is, arguably, a very difficult and highly specialized pursuit (please feel free to print this as a testimonial)!!!

At any rate, though, I really would like to have a new (better bound) copy of my HTML & XHTML w/CSS title. I miss it terribly!!! I was going to buy another one (today, in fact) when I bought the Ajax title. I just thought, though, it would be worth my while to mention my slightly disappointing experience and give to you guys the opportunity to fix it.

    Please write back soon...

    Thanks, Chris!!!

I shot you a private email with details concerning the interesting and surprisingly quick and thorough resolution I received after having wrtiten this comment thread. Suffice to say, though, everything's all good!!! Thanks for the brand new book!!! I won't EVER consider another publisher's books without first checking with O'Reilly to see if you guys have a better solution.

Hey, everybody!!! These guys are AWESOME (and quick, too)!!!

  • I’m frustrated
Just to let you know, i just purchased Head First iPhone Development (via Amazon UK) and it has the same issue - after reading the first 5 pages, it seems nearly 1/3 of the whole book's pages are about to fall out
It also has the [M] on the copyright page.

I assume the best recourse for me is to return it to Amazon UK?
