Head First PDFs render badly on the iPad

Head First HTML when viewed as a PDF on the iPad fails to render the images. Is this an issue with the PDF, or an issue with the iPad PDF reader? It is also the same on iOS 4.0 on the iPhone.

There were some recent updates to PDF rendering in iBooks? Have you tried that?
