Free upgrade for soon to be replaced eBook?

If I buy the 2nd edition of Head First iPhone Development (eBook!) now, will I receive a free update to the 3rd edition planned for March? If not, people like me probably will wait or forget to buy. Thanks, Thomas

  • Hi Thomas,
You would be eligible for the 50% off discount for the new edition mentioned here: https://members.oreilly.com/account/b...

When we mention updates, it is referring to formatting or errata fixes to that edition only. So for instance if you have Network Warrior 2nd edition, and the author releases corrections to the errata or there are formatting updates to the ebook versions, then when we update the ebook we send out an email usually to inform customers to download the "fixed and updated" ebook. This is 100% free.
If a new edition were to come out, that is when you would be eligible for the 50% off the new edition's ebook. This is what is generally referred to as an "upgrade" not an "update".

The upgrade offers are detailed here (in the middle tab of 40%- 50% off new editions) https://members.oreilly.com/account/b...
and the updates are further explained here:
    http://shop.oreilly.com/category/eboo...
    and here:
    http://shop.oreilly.com/category/cust...
Specifically where it says "When you purchase an ebook bundle you get free updates to reflect published changes and corrections."

  • Thanks a lot for the comprehensive answer!
50% is a fair number as a general agreement.
I would love to hear a 100% in a timeframe close enough to the release of the new edition. Quite normal in software business!
The advantage for the publisher is having the money now instead of later or never when the buyer may have already forgotten about his wish or bought somezhing else.

    Thanks!
