I’m confused

On page 312 of your Head First Excel book written by Michael Milton the subject is pivot tables and Michael describes 5 summaries to create pivot tables from. I cannot figure out how to create the 5th summary.

The average MPG of SUV's priced under $40,000. I can do the average MPG and SUV but I don't know where or how to create the condition for less than or equal to $40,000.00. I don't know how to insert the formula or condition for this equation in Excel 2007 pivot tables

  • Hi Rich,

    Thanks for your question. To determine if a number is less than or equal to a given target, you can use the IF function. For example, this function displays "Under target" if the number in A2 is less than or equal to 40000:

    =IF(A2<=40000, "Under target")

    You can adapt the results of the function by changing what follows the comma in the the function (the THEN part of an IF, THEN statement).

    For more details, you can see Example 2 in Microsoft's help information on the IF function. I hope this helps.
