Errata for MongoDB book.

I submitted an error for "MongoDB The Definitive Guide" a few days ago. I was it in the unconfirmed area but now it is gone. Any idea what happened to it?

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks for taking the time to submit errata, and for checking on this. The author wrote you a response, but it looks like it didn't get sent. Here's what he said:

"They are not asynchronous..." Shouldn't that be "They are asynchronous" or "They are not synchronous" ?

The sentence is correct, they are not asynchronous. Asynchronous would mean that the client sends a request to the server and then continues working, handling a response when one is available. There is no response, so all of the work is done synchronously (send request, then keep working). The sentence might have been clearer with a "rather," after the comma.

Since this is not an error, it's been removed from the errata page. Thanks again for taking the time to write and ask about something unclear.

    Kind Regards,

  • In my view the response goes against everything that I know to be true and the view of the industry. I'm really surprised that there were not any more comments on this. Synchronous calls block and wait for a response. Asynchronous calls do not block. I agree that there may be mechanisms to check on the result at a later time with asynchronous but that doesn't make them synchronous. I think that most people would agree that fire-and-forget means asynchronous.
