Eloquent Javascript: How are you supposed to run the code examples?

Eloquent Javascript:

Why am I working with code I cannot run?

It seems like all the code is designed to be executed in the authors website. If I want to run it elsewhere the author says, "some care is required". In other words you cannot.

Using the authors website I cannot save code, or load from a file. It is incredibly frustrating. All examples are running the code in a browsers console window. I am not sure I want to spend all my time typing and cutting and pasting inside a console window, or this website.

I am dumbfounded as to why I would be working with code I cannot save and run on my own computer. After all, JavaScript is supported by every web browser, why doesn't this code work in a web browser? I am learning JavaScript to use it in a web browser, why aren't I doing this.

Can someone explain this to me in a way that makes sense? I have never read a programming book where I was not encouraged to run the code on my own computer.
