I’m upset and frustrated.

Editing Text in SmartArt Graphics

In the Office 2008 book, it states you can edit text in a SmartArt Graphic by clicking on the text pane icon. But after I save the SmartArt graphic, I cannot get the text pane or find any way to edit my text. I love the book, but it doesn't answer this question. Please tell me what I need to do. Thanks, Roberta Stokes

  • Hi Roberta,

Thanks for contacting O'Reilly. Here are some tips and suggestions to address your Office 2008 Word text inquiry.

See page 244. (tip) adding text to captions
One way to add text to captions is to click the caption and choose Insert--> Caption. You can then type the extra text in the caption window itself. This technique produces a caption that you can't edit in the document itself. Make sure your inserted text is (finalized) here since you will not be able to edit this again, unless you remove the caption and start over.

    See page 242
Most people type in captions manually, but word's captioning feature can number, renumber and insert captions automatically. To caption an item,
(table, picture, text box or some object) first select it, then select Insert --> Caption. Instead of typing a caption, you build it using the caption dialog box. ( see Figure 7-21 ) pg 243.

I had this same problem, and realized I had saved the document as a .DOC version. I was able to re-save as a .DOCX file and then was able to click on the smartart graphic and edit the text pane as before.
