Copying code samples results in blocks of "private use" unicode characters

Copying code samples on Mac 10.8.4 now results in blocks of unreadable characters in a "private use" unicode character?! What's going on all of a sudden??

  • Hello Marc,

I'd be happy to help. Which book are you working with?

  • Hi Marc,

Also, can you let us know where you purchased the ebook and what reader you're using. Our ebooks are DRM-free and should be DRM-free from other retailers, so this shouldn't be happening.

I'm sorry for the inconvenience, and thanks for letting us know about this!

  • Hi. I'm working with Leaning Cocoa with Objective C (3rd Edition), PDF, which I purchased from O'Reilly's web site. The order number is # ML_1060783 from May 3, 2013.

I first noticed the problem trying to copy the code sample at step 4 on page 219. I then tried other code samples randomly throughout the book and it's doing the same thing. However, a month or so ago (before I had was in hospital, so had to pause my reading of it) I could copy samples fine. I suspect that perhaps Apple have released an update that has caused this, but I also downloaded Adobe Reader 11 yesterday and it has the same problem.

I then download the .epub version and opened it with Adobe Digital Editions 2.0 and it is allowing me to copy the text (it regards page 219 of the PDF as page 187, however). For now I have a solution but I prefer the PDF (being a full facsimile of the printed book) so I look forward to you figuring this out one day soon :-)

    Thanks.

  • Hi Marc,

I confirmed with our ebooks team that nothing has changed on our end, and I also confirmed that copying and pasting from the ebook doesn't cause any problems for me, so I suspect it's an issue with Adobe Reader, but it's a pretty strange one. It looks like Adobe Digital Editions also supports PDF, so you might try PDFs there instead.

To help with the code copying issue another way, I wanted to make sure you know you can download the full code examples from
    http://examples.oreilly.com/0636920023203/
    . I hope that helps!
