Cannot open downloaded Quickbook 2010 sample file

Downloaded "OpeningBal_JournalEntry_Portable.QBM" from Quickbook 2010 Missing CD-ROM link. Open/Restore this portable file. When in Save as screen, QB report "Quickbooks cannot open this file because it's not a valid quickbooks portable company file". Help.

  • Hi there.

Sorry to hear you're having trouble opening the sample file.

I contacted the author, and she sent along some advice:
    ------------------------------------
    Try this:
    Download the file.
    Then, launch QuickBooks.
In QuickBooks, choose File-->Open or Restore File.
Select the "restore a portable file" option.
    Select the file you downloaded.
    That should work.

If you try to open the file by double-clicking it in Windows Explorer, you'll get the error message you mentioned.
    -------------------------------------

I hope that helps. Please let me know if you continue to have problems.

    Best,

    • That's exactly what I've done. I can open the portable file but when I get to save as screen, it gave me the error message that "this file is not a valid portable company file". I tried download it again, same result. I tried save it to another drive (different from where I download), same result. I tried save it in different names when asked for saved as name, same result. I am using Window 7.

  • Hi again.

I pinged the author, and she sent me a new version of the company file, which I've posted for you at http://ftp.oreilly.com/outgoing/Openi...

This is a full-sized company file, not a portable file, so keep that in mind.

Fingers crossed this works for you!

    Best,
