Can MacBook Pro, with SuperDrive, running on Leopard ver. 10.5.1 play a purchased movie DVD on Blue-Ray Disk?

Can MacBook Pro, with SuperDrive, running on Leopard ver. 10.5.1 play a purchased movie DVD on Blue-Ray Disk? If not, how can I watch a Blue-Ray Disk on my Mac? Your Leopard Missing Manual Book does not mention anything about Blue Ray Disk. Thank you.

  • I don't believe the Superdrives in the Mac Book Pro computers are Blu-Ray compatible. Here's the drive's specifications from the Apple website:

    8x slot-loading SuperDrive (DVD±R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
    Maximum write: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R; 4x DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD-R; 10x CD-RW
    Maximum read: 8x DVD-R, DVD+R, DVD-ROM; 6x DVD-ROM (double layer DVD-9), DVD-R DL (double layer), DVD+R DL (double layer), DVD-RW, DVD+RW; 24x CD

I'm thinking you need a separate Blu-Ray drive. Searching for "blu-ray external disc drives" returned a number of results.

    Good luck,
    Laurie

  • Im itching to get into the blue ray scene too, i was thinking that my mac book could burn blue ray? Now im not sure? But i do know that the best place to buy a blue ray player is probably waltmart at around 370, still a chunk of change for a movie player? I think at the prices they are commanding you should just get a PS3, for 399 then you get the game system and a blue ray disc player

  • A PS3 is most likely your best bet for a Blu-Ray player. Since Sony frequently releases firmware updates for the PS3, the Blu-Ray functionality of it stays the most up to date. Meaning you always get the best selection of features available on Blu-Ray discs, such as Picture in Picture and Internet Connectivity (I believe these were brought in, in the most recent firmware update, don't quote me though, I'm an HD-DVD user).

If you want to burn Blu-Ray discs, you'll need something like: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product...
And then you'll also need the propers attachments to be able to utilize it as an external burning device on a laptop.

If you need more information about HD Movies and equipment, I highly recommend visiting the AVS forum section dedicated to this topic:
