AVR serial communication BAUD issue

I'm working through the "Make: AVR Programming" book using atmega328p chip with AVR Dude on a MAC and a SparkFun Pocket Programmer. I was having trouble getting the serial communication to work with the MAC, just getting "unprintabel" characters. Finally I happened to set the BAUD to 1200 in the Serial Monitor (Arduino IDE) and it started working! It also worked for ZTerm. Everywhere in the code BAUD is defined as 9600 (in USART.c and in Make File). Any hints how to actually set it to 9600?
Thanks for any suggestions.
