2nd Edition of Make: Electronics by Platt

Re: Make: Electronics by Platt, November 2009. Given the massive errata, surely there will soon be an updated/revised 2nd edition of this book. What is the scheduled publication date of the 2nd edition? Thanks.

    Hi Kenni,
We incorporate errata on a rolling basis. The Date Corrected column indicates in which reprint the mistake was corrected. If you buy the book, you should receive the latest version, though if you buy it and end up with an older version, get in touch with O'Reilly customer service to see if a replacement is possible. If you buy the ebook bundle from oreilly.com, you will receive updated eBook files each time a correction is issued.

  • Hello Brian,
Thanks for your response. I don't have an ebook, so I reply on published editions. I feel like you only partly answered my question. The second part of the question was: When can I expect the 2nd edition of Make: Electronics by Platt to be publised. Thank you. - Kenni -

Hi Kenni, sorry if I wasn't explicit in my response. For errata, we don't issue new editions. Instead, we handle those at reprint so readers don't have to wait so long to obtain corrections.

For a new edition, we would want to introduce substantial new material, generally something.more than corrections. At the moment, the author is writing Make: More Electronics and finishing the three volume Encyclopedia of Electronic Components. He and I have also discussed what would go into the second edition of Make: Electronics, but we have not yet scheduled that new edition so I don't have a date on that.

However, at the moment, all errata has either been incorporated into the February reprint or otherwise acknowledged by the author (I believe there are only three that he declined to incorporate, and he has posted his reasons on the errata page).

  • Hi Brian,
Your last answer is exactly what I was looking for! Thanks. I will purchase the February reprint and then recheck the errata page. As I understand reprints, I should look in the first couple of pages to check that the date of the reprint is February 2013. I can do that at a local bookstore, but if I order from Amazon (which is much cheaper), I don't know if I'll be getting the February 2013 reprint. However, it being Amazon, I would hope that they would have the February reprint(?).

    Your comments?

Hi Kenni, that's exactly right though it occurs to me that the February reprint may not be in the retail channel yet. And I just reviewed the confirmed errata page, and everything there seems to have been taken care of in the most recent reprint. I may be mistaken about a February reprint (I'm on the east coast and on my third day without power so I'm working off my phone and my memory.) Either way, according to the errata page, everything on the confirmed page has been handled in the Dec 2012 reprint, leaving only the four unconfirmed errata and the confirmed ones that the author declined to change.

So Amazon should have the Dec 2012 version, which is the most up to date until the next reprint.
